Joining host Mike Messner for the season premiere is a familiar voice: fellow Gordon Lightfoot fan Deb Radwan, making her tenth appearance on the show. This time around, Mike and Deb take a trip back to 1978 and Lightfoot’s Endless Wire album to discuss its opening track, “Daylight Katy.”
Just who is Daylight Katy? There are conflicting stories about the song’s inspiration, and the lyrics don’t exactly clear things up. A cat? A kept woman? A creature of the nightlife? Or something else entirely?
Mike and Deb dig into those lyrics and some of their wonderfully ambiguous imagery, including Katy’s mysterious relationship with the sea. The discussion also looks at the song’s place on Endless Wire, its release as a single and its chart performance, and its surprisingly short life in Lightfoot’s concert repertoire.
